Set in the charming setting of Villa Mimbelli, an extraordinary example of 19th-century eclectic architecture and decoration, the 'Giovanni Fattori' Civic Museum offers a fascinating journey through Tuscan and Italian art from the mid-1800s to the 1940s. 

The museum route highlights the rich collections of painting, sculpture, and graphics, leading visitors to discover the great protagonists of the Macchiaioli movement and the subsequent artistic experiences that flourished particularly in Livorno.

The museum's path retraces the evolution of Livornese and Tuscan painting, from the masters of Giovanni Fattori to the key figures of the Macchiaioli school, up to early 20th-century artists, including Plinio Nomellini, Vittorio Corcos, Oscar Ghiglia, Mario Puccini, and the early experiences of Amedeo Modigliani. The journey wraps up with works dedicated to post-war Livorno, witnessing the legacy of Fattori and the influence of the Macchiaioli on 20th-century art.

The Mediterranean Natural History Museum is located in the historic Villa Henderson, with the exhibition areas situated in the modern building designed by architect Giuseppe Milanesi. Further expansions have led to the creation of the Invertebrates Hall, the Botanical Garden, the Temporary Exhibitions Hall, and especially the Sea Hall, dedicated to Mediterranean cetaceans. Visiting it is especially recommended if you follow the Aquarium focus "Tuscany’s Sea Predators" to experience the thrill of walking under the skeleton of a common whale. In 2924, thanks to the PNRR M1C3 for removing physical and cognitive barriers in museums and cultural sites, the Museum renovated and upgraded its exhibition spaces and tracks with immersive technologies, multisensory stations, and new barrier-free environments.
